Southern Yellow Pine (SYP)
Heavy, stiff American pine for structure, decking and treated work.
Overview
Southern yellow pine is the trade name for four pines of the American South: longleaf, slash, loblolly and shortleaf. It has a reddish-brown heartwood and a wide, yellowish-white sapwood, and it is heavy, strong and stiff for a softwood, longleaf and slash most of all. That wide sapwood takes preservative deeply under pressure without incising, which makes it the most widely treated timber in the United States. Treated, it goes into decking, posts and outdoor structures; kiln dried, into joists, trusses, flooring and general framing.
