SPF (Spruce-Pine-Fir)
Light, pale Canadian framing timber, kiln dried and grade stamped.
Overview
SPF is a Canadian species group rather than a single tree: white, black, red and Engelmann spruce, lodgepole and jack pine, and alpine and balsam fir. They grow together, are hard to tell apart once sawn and perform alike, so they are graded and stamped as one product under NLGA rules. The wood is pale and light, straight grained with small, tight knots; it glues well and is strong for its weight. It is usually supplied kiln dried to 19% or less, often also heat treated for export (KD-HT), for wall and roof framing, trusses and prefabricated building. Its natural durability is low and it is hard to treat, so untreated SPF belongs indoors or under cover.
