Sapele
The reddish mahogany of doors and window frames.
Overview
Sapele is a medium reddish-brown African hardwood with an interlocked grain that produces a ribbon figure on quarter-sawn faces. It is harder and heavier than true mahogany, moderately durable, and stable enough for doors, window frames and staircases. Interlocked grain can tear when planing, so sharp tooling matters.
