Wenge
Near-black, finely striped and very hard, for statement furniture and floors.
Overview
Wenge is a very dense Central African hardwood with a dark brown heartwood marked by fine, alternating light and dark stripes, darkening towards black in the light. It is hard to very hard and naturally durable, used for high-end furniture, flooring, panelling and exterior joinery. It blunts tools quickly, so carbide-tipped tooling is the norm; pre-drill before nailing or screwing, and finish it with wax, as it is difficult to polish.
